Unlock the Secrets of the Reef with SSI Coral Identification! 🪸🧬

Ever looked at a reef and seen a beautiful but confusing wall of shapes? Corals are the architects of the ocean, providing a home for 25% of all marine life. The SSI Coral Identification specialty turns that "wall of color" into a detailed map of living organisms. Whether you are a diver, snorkeler, or beachcomber, this course gives you the eyes of a marine biologist to identify the different functional groups of corals found worldwide.

Why Study Coral Identification?

  • See the Reef Differently: Learn to distinguish between hard corals, soft corals, and the specific growth forms like branching, plate, or brain corals.

  • Understand Reef Health: Identify signs of coral bleaching, disease, and predation, and learn what a healthy reef should look like.

  • Global Recognition: The skills you learn apply to the Indo-Pacific, the Red Sea, and the Caribbean.

  • Conservation Impact: Gain the knowledge to participate in coral restoration projects and reef surveys.

Course Prerequisites

This program is one of the most accessible in the SSI catalog—perfect for anyone who loves the sea.

  • Minimum Age: 6 years old (a fantastic way to introduce kids to marine science).

  • Certification: None required. You do not need to be a certified diver to take this course.

    • Note: To complete the optional open water training sessions, you must be a certified Open Water Diver or a proficient snorkeler.

  • Medical: No specific medical requirements for the theory-only portion.

Course Structure

The program is designed to be completed in a few hours and focuses on visual recognition patterns.

  1. Digital Learning (Theory):
Complete the academic sessions via the MySSI App. You will study:

    • Coral Biology: Understanding the symbiotic relationship between polyps and zooxanthellae.

    • Identification Keys: Using growth forms and skeletal structures to categorize corals.

    • The Coral Triangle: Exploring the world's most biodiverse marine regions.

    • Threats & Protection: Learning about ocean acidification and how we can protect reefs.

  2. Practical Application (Optional):
    Many SSI Training Centers offer:

    • Interactive Workshops: Using photo galleries and local ID guides to practice categorization.

    • Two Training Dives/Snorkels: Head underwater with an instructor to identify coral families in their natural habitat.

Recognition

This certification counts toward your SSI Specialty Diver, Advanced Open Water, and Master Diver ratings. It is also a vital piece of the SSI Ecology Bundle! Ready to identify the builders of the sea?
