The SSI Boat Diving Specialty ensures you have the knowledge and skills to feel right at home on any vessel, whether it's a small RIB, a day boat, or a luxury liveaboard.

Course Prerequisites

This specialty is the perfect addition to your early diving education.

  • Minimum Age: 10 years old.

  • Certification: Must be a certified Open Water Diver (or currently enrolled in an Open Water course).

  • Medical: Standard "Fit to Dive" medical questionnaire.

 

 

Course Structure

The Boat Diving program focuses on the logistics and practicalities of diving from a moving platform.

  1. Digital Learning (Theory):
    Complete the academic sessions via the MySSI App. You will study:

    • Boat Terminology: Learning your port from your starboard and your bow from your stern.

    • Vessel Types: Understanding the differences between inflatable RIBs, hard boats, and liveaboards.

    • Equipment Handling: How to stow and secure your gear to prevent damage during transit.

    • Safety & Emergency: Using marine radios, life rafts, and oxygen kits.

  2. Practical Application (Open Water Dives):
    You will complete at least two training dives from a boat, focusing on:

    • Entry & Exit Techniques: Practicing the best way to get into and out of the water based on the boat's design.

    • Surface Procedures: Learning how to signal the boat and use a mermaid line or tag line.

    • Onboard Organization: Managing your space and kit in a potentially crowded environment.

 

Recognition

This certification counts toward your SSI Specialty Diver, Advanced Open Water, and Master Diver ratings!
