The SSI Photo & Video specialty is your guide to moving beyond "blue and blurry" shots to creating stunning, high-quality images and films. Whether you're using a GoPro, a compact camera, or a high-end housing, this course teaches you the secrets to capturing the vibrant colors and life of the ocean.

Course Prerequisites

This specialty is designed to be accessible to divers of all levels who want to improve their creative skills.

  • Minimum Age: 10 years old.

  • Certification: Must be a certified Open Water Diver (or have a qualifying certification from another agency).

  • Medical: Standard "Fit to Dive" medical questionnaire.

 

 

Course Structure

The Photo & Video program blends creative theory with hands-on practice in the water.

  1. Digital Learning (Theory):
    Complete the academic sessions via the MySSI App. You will study:

    • Equipment Basics: Choosing the right camera, housings, and strobe/light systems.

    • Underwater Physics: How water affects light, color, and magnification.

    • Composition & Lighting: Learning the "Rule of Thirds" and how to use natural vs. artificial light.

    • Post-Production: An introduction to basic editing and color correction.

  2. Practical Application (Pool or Open Water):
    You will complete two training dives (in a pool/confined water or open water) focusing on:

    • Gear Preparation: Learning how to seal and test your housing to prevent leaks.

    • Subject Approach: How to get close to marine life without causing stress.

    • Shot Execution: Practicing white balancing, steady filming, and still-life framing.

 

Recognition

This certification counts toward your SSI Specialty Diver, Advanced Open Water, and Master Diver ratings! Ready to become an underwater storyteller? If you do not have a camera rent one in our dive shop. Olympus and Gopro available for renting.
