Protect Your Investment with the SSI Equipment Techniques Specialty!

Your dive gear is your life support system—knowing how it works is the key to a safer, more confident diving experience. The SSI Equipment Techniques specialty is designed to take the mystery out of your kit. Whether you want to perform basic field repairs, understand the inner workings of your regulator, or simply ensure your expensive investment lasts for years, this course is an essential addition to any diver's toolkit.

Why Master Equipment Techniques?

  • Prevent Dive Cancellations: Learn to fix common issues like blown O-rings or leaky hoses right on the boat.

  • Understand Your Gear: Go beyond "plug and play" to understand the mechanics of regulators, BCDs, and dive computers.

  • Proper Maintenance: Master the best practices for cleaning, storing, and transporting your equipment to avoid costly repairs.

  • Expert Advice: Learn what to look for when buying new gear so you choose the right fit for your diving style.

Course Prerequisites

This specialty is highly accessible and focuses on knowledge and hands-on skills rather than underwater maneuvers.

  • Minimum Age: 10 years old.

  • Certification: Must be a certified Open Water Diver (or have a qualifying certification from another agency).

  • Medical: Standard "Fit to Dive" medical questionnaire.

Course Structure

The Equipment Techniques program is a "dry" specialty, meaning no dives are required to earn your certification.

  1. Digital Learning (Theory):
Complete the academic sessions through the MySSI App. You will study:

    • The Total Diving System: A deep dive into all components of your gear.

    • Physics and Gear: How pressure and saltwater affect different materials.

    • Advanced Equipment: An introduction to specialized gear like dry suits and technical diving setups.

  2. Practical Application Session:
This is the hands-on heart of the course. Under the guidance of an SSI Professional, you will:

    • Disassemble and Assemble: Practice basic maintenance on common gear components.

    • Troubleshooting: Learn to identify wear and tear before it becomes a failure.

    • Save-a-Dive Kit: Learn how to build the ultimate emergency repair kit.

Recognition

Because this is a "dry" course, you can complete it in a single afternoon at your local dive center. It counts toward your SSI Specialty Diver, Advanced Open Water, and Master Diver ratings!
