Separate Fact from Fiction with the SSI Shark Ecology Specialty!

Are you fascinated by the ocean’s most misunderstood apex predators? Sharks are often portrayed as mindless villains, but the reality is they are essential, graceful, and highly complex creatures. The SSI Shark Ecology specialty is your chance to replace fear with facts. Whether you're a diver wanting to feel more comfortable in the water or a land-based ocean lover, this course reveals why a healthy ocean needs sharks.

Why Study Shark Ecology?

  • Identify Species: Learn to recognize different shark families by their unique silhouettes and behaviors.

  • Debunk Myths: Separate the Hollywood "Jaws" image from the reality of shark biology and their interactions with humans.

  • Conservation First: Understand the devastating impact of finning and overfishing, and how you can support global shark protection.

  • Interaction Etiquette: Learn the "dos and don'ts" of diving or snorkeling with sharks to ensure a safe and respectful experience for both you and the animal.

Course Prerequisites

This is an ecology specialty, making it a perfect educational tool for everyone!

  • Minimum Age: 6 years old (a great way to get kids excited about marine conservation).

  • Certification: None required. You do not need to be a scuba diver to take this course.

    • Note: If you choose to add optional training dives, an entry-level certification like Open Water Diver is required.

  • Medical: No specific medical requirements for the theory-only portion.

Course Structure

The program is designed to be engaging and flexible, focusing on digital learning and expert discussion.

  1. Digital Learning (Theory):
Complete the academic sessions via the MySSI App. Key topics include:

    • Evolution & Biology: How sharks have remained unchanged for millions of years.

    • Sensory Systems: Understanding their "sixth sense" (electroreception) and how they hunt.

    • The Food Chain: Why the loss of sharks would lead to a collapse of the marine ecosystem.

  2. Practical Application (Optional):
While the certification can be earned through theory alone, many SSI Centers offer:

    • Instructor-Led Workshops: Deep dives into local shark species and conservation efforts.

    • Optional Shark Dives/Snorkels: Two sessions to observe sharks in their natural habitat, focusing on identification and behavior.
